Based on the MX-5 Grand Touring retractable hardtop trim level, the MX-5 Special Edition receives a number of features typically found as options. Sport-tuned Bilstein dampers and a limited -slip rear differential, normally part of a $500 package, are now standard. Additionally, the $1650 Premium Package, which throws in HID headlamps, keyless ignition, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and Sirius satellite radio, is also included in every SE car.
The difference, it seems, lies in the cosmetic details. MX-5 Special Edition models are available in two exclusive colors (Sparkling Black Mica or Dolphin Gray Mica), and are paired with black leather seats with contrasting gray stitching. Polished 17-inch aluminum wheels are standard, as are chrome-finished interior accents and, provided you opt for the manual transmission, polished aluminum sport pedals.
Mazda plans on building only 750 examples of the 2011 MX-5 Special Edition. given they start at $31,720 -- roughly $225 more than a comparably-equipped MX-5 Grand Touring PRHT -- we expect them to quickly zoom-zoom off dealers' lots later this year.
